“I know nothing in the world that has as much power as a word.

Sometimes I write one and look at it until it shines.”

The Paper Lantern Storytelling Workshops are a group of Copenhagen-based workshops that combine two of my own passions: writing and visual arts. The focus of these workshops is storytelling and discovering how to bring the stories we want to tell into written and/or visual forms.

Like paper lanterns can illuminate a space with their enchanting glow, we will illuminate creative processes in various formats and explore different ways to tell captivating stories.

Storytelling Essentials Workshop Series

This series is comprised of five workshop sessions, each session focusing on a specific aspect of writing. The goal is for you to come out of these sessions with a better understanding of the fundamentals of storytelling and to make progress on a writing project you would like to develop.

The series explores essential aspects of storytelling in various writing forms such as screenwriting, fiction and playwriting. Whether you want to write films, fiction or theater, these workshops investigate the common storytelling foundations and techniques that can be applied to writing in these formats.

Open to all levels of writers. All workshop sessions are discussion-based. Please note this series is capped at seven people and students must sign up for all five sessions in the series.

Session 1

Oct. 7, 10:00-13:00 (includes a short break with coffee, tea & a light snack)

Creating Character

In screenwriting and fiction writing, compelling three-dimensional characters are at the heart of a great story. In this workshop, we’ll discuss what it means to write complex characters, how to generate ideas for characters, and explore techniques for creating well-rounded characters for your short stories, novels, screenplays, or plays. You will begin to create at least one new character for a story you would like to write.

Session 2

Oct. 14th, 10:00-13:00 (includes a short break with coffee, tea & a light snack)

Building story: Story Structure Foundations (Part 1)

In this workshop, we will discuss the three-act structure and how to apply it to the stories we want to tell. The discussion will also address story-telling essentials like building conflict, tension, suspense, and theme. We will begin to write loglines and synopses of our stories.

Session 3

Oct. 21st, 10:00-13:00 (includes a short break, coffee, tea & a light snack)

Building story: Story Structure Foundations (Part 2)

A continuation of Story Structure Part 1, we will continue our discussion of the three-act structure and students will have the opportunity to workshop their synopses or beginnings of treatments.

Session 4

Oct. 28, 10:00-13:00 (includes a short break with coffee, tea & a light snack)

Visual Storytelling

In this workshop, we will explore the art of showing rather than telling. We will discuss how to convey the inner lives of characters through action and how to write in the most visual way. We will study techniques and examples in both screenwriting and fiction. Students will use characters they’re developing or would like to develop to write scenes and work on the most visual ways to tell their stories.

Session 5:

Nov. 4, 10:00-13:00 (includes a short break with coffee, tea & a light snack)

Dialogue

What makes great dialogue? How can we move scenes and stories forward with it? In this workshop, we’ll take an in-depth look at what goes into writing strong dialogue for your story, screenplay or play. We will focus on subtext and how to capture the voices of your characters to make them come to life for the reader or viewer.

Total cost for Storytelling Essentials Series (5 sessions):

3,000 DKK
